Jamaiya Williams does not fit the High School Cheerleader rubric…or does she? There has to be more. Correction: there is more.

She is a sophomore this school year and, as many know of you know, participates on our varsity cheer squad, but that’s not all you’ll find her in! I asked one of her close friends what activities she is involved in. The friend replied, “Cheerleading.” Nothing more and nothing less. I asked Jamaiya the same question and she replied: “I’m in the HS student advisory board, student council, and a varsity cheerleader.” Why didn’t her friend know that?! Is she holding a secret life or is her friend not thoroughly involved?! I dug deeper…

I asked a student from the HS Academy advisory board about her participation, and the student replied: “…she’s involved in it… she adds on to other ideas.” I then asked a student from the student council about her participation in that activity, and received the response: “She’s there sometimes…” I then realized: Jamaiya’s dedication and devotion to cheerleading obstructs the attendance of other activities. She is so busy with cheer that it is unlikely to see her in anything else. To my surprise, and maybe your own, her life does not end at one passion… it goes on. Or maybe she is maintaining a secret life? Is there a hidden Jamaiya that we haven’t seen? Or, maybe she has a hidden modesty that we can learn from. I continued on…

After asking her about her cheer career, she replied, “In fourth grade they offered cheerleading, I began cheering then. Since the years have progressed I’ve became more and more fascinated with it. I’ve done it so long it’s became a part of the way I live.” Although she obviously loves it dearly, I do not think it is fair to her to minimize her to one persona. Jamaiya Williams is more than an awesome cheerleader. She is a leader, politician, student (with a 3.5 GPA let me add), future pediatrician, graduate, goal-setter, and most importantly: herself. I envy her confidence and am proud of her personal growth that she has shared via social media. I expect great things from her, and know she does the same.
